Trophime Bigot

Trophime Bigot was a French painter of the Baroque era, active in Rome and his native Provence between 1579 and 1650. Also known as the Candlelight Master for his intimate candle-lit scenes, he was long thought to be two separate artists until the mid twentieth century, when the altarpiece painter of Arles and the Candlelight Master of Rome were shown to be the same person. Born in Arles, he worked in Italy between 1620 and 1634 before returning to Provence, where he painted altarpieces for local churches in Arles and Aix-en-Provence, and was buried in Avignon in 1650.
