Agnes Martin

Agnes Martin was an abstract painter born in Canada in 1912 who died in 2004, known for large-scale canvases built from delicate hand-drawn grids and horizontal bands of pale color, associated loosely with both Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism though she resisted both labels, describing her own work as concerned with emotion and perfection rather than geometry. She lived for extended periods in New Mexico, withdrawing from the New York art world in 1967 for nearly a decade before resuming painting, and received the National Medal of Arts in 1998.
