Giuseppe Calì

Giuseppe Calì was a Maltese painter of Italian descent, born in Valletta on 14 August 1846 and died on 1 March 1930. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples under Giuseppe Mancinelli from 1865, though he was drawn more to the anti academic Verismo of Domenico Morelli than to Neo-Classicism. His painting The Death of Dragut, bought by the government in 1867, launched his career, and he went on to produce more than 600 works, decorating church interiors across Malta and painting around fifty portraits of notable figures. He trained students including his son Ramiro Raffaele Calì and the painter Gianni Vella, and Malta later honoured him with a postage stamp in 1996 and a coin in 2004.
