Annie Leibovitz is an American portrait photographer born in 1949 who rose to prominence as chief photographer for Rolling Stone magazine beginning in 1973, where her final assignment there was photographing John Lennon hours before his murder in 1980, and later became the principal photographer for Vanity Fair from 1983 onward. Known for elaborately staged celebrity portraits, she has photographed an unusually wide range of cultural and political figures, and has received the International Center of Photography's Infinity Award and been named a Commandeur of France's Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
