Walker Evans (1903 to 1975) was an American photographer and photojournalist best known for his work for the Resettlement Administration and the Farm Security Administration, for which he documented the effects of the Great Depression, mostly using a large-format 8 by 10 inch view camera. Evans claimed that his goal as a photographer was to make pictures that are literate, authoritative and transcendent, and his work is held in the permanent collections of museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the George Eastman Museum, each of which has staged retrospectives of it.
