Edward Jean Steichen (1879 to 1973) was a Luxembourgish American photographer, painter and curator, a pioneer of fashion photography whose 1911 gown images for Art et Decoration were the first modern fashion photographs published. He served as chief photographer for the Conde Nast magazines Vogue and Vanity Fair from 1923 to 1938, directed the Academy Award-winning war documentary The Fighting Lady during his Second World War Naval service, and from 1947 to 1961 served as Director of the Department of Photography at New York's Museum of Modern Art, where he curated the touring exhibition The Family of Man, seen by nine million people and later added to UNESCO's Memory of the World Register.
