Paintings whose primary subject is the depiction of a specific individual or small group, from single sitters to court or family groupings, in the tradition the Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus classifies as portraiture, one of the classical hierarchy of painting genres. Belongs here: single, double and group portraits, self-portraits, and formal state or court portraits. Does not belong here: paintings whose figures illustrate a religious, mythological or historical narrative rather than a named sitter, which are grouped under Religious and Mythological Paintings or History and Political Paintings, and everyday domestic or social scenes with no identified sitter, which are grouped under Genre Scenes.
