Hokusai (Katsushika Hokusai) was a Japanese printmaker and painter of the Edo period, best known for the woodblock print series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji. Working across a career of more than seventy years under dozens of different names, he brought the ukiyo-e tradition of pictures of the floating world to its technical and compositional peak, and his prints later influenced European painters including Van Gogh and Monet.
