Aaron Copland was an American composer, conductor, and writer often called the Dean of American Music for his role in forging a distinctly American classical sound. His best-known works, including the ballets Appalachian Spring, Billy the Kid, and Rodeo, and the orchestral Fanfare for the Common Man, are built from open, slowly shifting harmonies that evoke the American landscape and its pioneer heritage. Especially in the compositions he wrote during the 1930s and 1940s, Copland deliberately pursued what he called a vernacular style, blending folk material and modernist technique into music accessible to broad audiences without sacrificing artistic ambition.
