América Invertida is a 1943 pen and ink drawing by the Uruguayan artist Joaquín Torres García, depicting a map of South America with the southern tip oriented at the top rather than the bottom. The work grew out of Torres García's theory of constructive universalism and his manifesto The School of the South, through which he argued for an autonomous Latin American art that did not orient itself toward the traditional cultural centers of Europe and North America. The drawing has since become an icon of Uruguayan popular culture.
