Doris Salcedo, born in 1958 in Bogota, is a Colombian sculptor and installation artist whose work confronts the trauma, loss and disappearance produced by Colombia's decades of civil conflict. She transforms ordinary domestic objects, furniture, concrete, textiles, into memorials to specific and often undocumented victims. Her best known work, Shibboleth, a 167-meter crack she opened through the floor of Tate Modern's Turbine Hall in 2007, gave physical form to social and racial division.
