Louise Nevelson

Louise Nevelson was a sculptor born in Ukraine in 1899 who died in 1988, known for monumental wall-like sculptures assembled from found wooden objects such as crates, moldings and furniture parts, painted a single uniform color, usually black, to unify the disparate pieces into a coherent whole. Her breakthrough came with Sky Cathedral in 1958, and she went on to become one of the most prominent American sculptors of the twentieth century, later also working in aluminum, steel and Plexiglas for large public commissions.
