Claes Oldenburg was a Swedish-American sculptor who lived from 1929 to 2022, a key figure of Pop Art known for soft sculptures and large-scale public installations of everyday objects rendered at monumental scale, such as Clothespin in Philadelphia and Spoonbridge and Cherry in Minneapolis, many made in collaboration with his wife, the artist Coosje van Bruggen, from 1976 onward. His 1961 storefront installation The Store, in which he sold handmade plaster replicas of consumer goods, was an early landmark of Pop Art's engagement with commercial culture.
