Henry Moore was a British sculptor best known for large-scale abstracted bronze and stone figures, most often reclining human forms pierced with organic holes and hollows that treat empty space as an active part of the sculptural composition. Drawing on both the direct-carving tradition and non-Western sculptural sources he studied in the British Museum, Moore developed a distinctive biomorphic vocabulary in which the human body is simplified toward landscape-like forms, evoking hills, caves, and bone. His public commissions, sited in cities and parks worldwide, made him one of the most widely recognized sculptors of the twentieth century.
