Mahmoud Mokhtar (1891-1934) was an Egyptian sculptor widely regarded as the father of modern Egyptian sculpture, the first to combine academic European training with Egyptian subject matter and forms drawn from ancient Egyptian art. His best known work, Egypt's Awakening, begun as a small model in 1920 and unveiled as a monumental granite sculpture in Cairo in 1928, became a symbol of Egyptian national revival and today stands at Cairo University.
