Jeff Koons is an American artist born in 1955, known for sculpture that appropriates and enlarges everyday and kitsch objects, including the Balloon Dog series, cast in stainless steel with a mirror-polished surface, and the later Made in Heaven series. A former commodities broker, he became one of the highest-selling living artists; a 1986 Balloon Dog sculpture sold for more than 58 million dollars in 2013, at the time a record for a work by a living artist. Critics remain divided over whether his work sincerely celebrates popular taste or offers an ironic critique of consumer culture.
