Donatello was a Florentine sculptor of the early Renaissance whose innovations in bronze and marble carving established sculpture as an art capable of the same psychological depth and naturalism that painters of his generation were pursuing. His bronze David, the first known free-standing nude statue since antiquity, and his dramatic wooden and bronze figures of saints and prophets combined careful study of classical models with an unprecedented attention to individual character and emotional expression. Working chiefly in Florence and Padua, Donatello trained and influenced a generation of later sculptors and is regarded as one of the founding figures of Renaissance art.
