Grant Wood

Grant Wood was an American Regionalist painter who lived from 1891 to 1942, born and raised in rural Iowa, best known for American Gothic, his 1930 painting of a farmer and a woman standing before a white farmhouse, which became one of the most recognized and parodied images in American art. Alongside Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry he helped found the Regionalist movement, painting stylized, precisely rendered scenes of Midwestern rural life at a time when much of American art was turning toward European modernism and abstraction. He taught painting at the University of Iowa in his later career.
