The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa is a white marble sculptural group by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, carved between 1647 and 1652 for the Cornaro Chapel in the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome, where it remains. It shows the Spanish nun Teresa of Avila in the mystical rapture she herself described, with an angel standing over her holding a spear, set within a theatrical marble stage flanked by portrait sculptures of members of the Cornaro family watching from balconies as though present at a performance. Considered one of the sculptural masterpieces of the High Roman Baroque, it is celebrated for fusing sculpture, architecture and light into a single unified, dramatic scene.
