Cloud Gate is a stainless steel public sculpture by the artist Anish Kapoor, built from 168 welded plates between 2004 and 2006 and formally dedicated on May 15, 2006, in Grainger Plaza at Millennium Park in Chicago. Measuring about 10 by 20 by 13 metres and weighing some 110 tons, its polished, seamless surface reflects and distorts the city skyline and the clouds above, and visitors can walk beneath its arch through a concave underside Kapoor calls the omphalos. Widely known by its nickname the Bean, a name Kapoor at first resisted before accepting, it has become one of Chicago's most recognized attractions and the work for which Kapoor is best known in the United States.
