Filling the Gaps: New Forms and New Connections in the Arts Atlas

7 stops

One wave minted three art forms that had no page at all, Ceramics, Textile Arts and Photography, and gave four existing forms their first real citizens: architects for Architecture, Rembrandt for Printmaking, Shakespeare and Modernism for Theatre, and two long-missing names for Film. This trail walks all seven.

Stop 1 of 7.
Art Forms

Ceramics: shaping and firing clay, practiced independently in East Asia, the Islamic world, ancient Greece and the pre-Columbian Americas, minted this wave as one of the atlas's most universal crafts.

Stop 2 of 7.
Art Forms

Textile Arts: weaving, knotting, felting, dyeing and embroidery, the tradition that gave the Silk Road its name, minted alongside Ceramics as a domestic lineage distinct from painting and sculpture's workshop guilds.

Stop 3 of 7.
Art Forms

Photography: invented in France in the 1830s through Joseph Niepce and Louis Daguerre's parallel work, minted this wave as the atlas's newest visual art.

Stop 4 of 7.
Art Forms

Architecture: wired this wave to its first six practitioners, Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Philip Johnson, John Burgee, Louis Sullivan and Peter Behrens, and to twenty works including Fallingwater and the Seagram Building.

Stop 5 of 7.
Art Forms

Printmaking: joined this wave by Rembrandt, now practiced alongside Hokusai, European etching and Japanese ukiyo-e sharing one form page.

Stop 6 of 7.
Art Forms

Theatre: gained its first practitioner, William Shakespeare, and its first movement link, Modernism, in the same wave.

Stop 7 of 7.
Art Forms

Film: gained the aliases Cinema and Motion Pictures this wave, the common names readers actually search for.
