Chrysler Building

Towers and Skyscrapers

The Chrysler Building is a 1,046-foot Art Deco skyscraper at the intersection of 42nd Street and Lexington Avenue in the East Midtown neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City, designed by the architect William Van Alen and completed in 1930. It is the tallest steel-framed brick building in the world, and it was both the first supertall skyscraper ever built and, for eleven months after its completion, the tallest building in the world before being surpassed by the Empire State Building. Commissioned by the automobile executive Walter Chrysler, it remains one of the most celebrated examples of Art Deco architecture in New York City.
