The Villa of Agrippa Postumus is an ancient Roman estate at Boscotrecase, on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius in Campania, Italy, built between about 21 and 16 BC and associated with Agrippa Postumus, grandson of the emperor Augustus. The villa was buried, and its decoration preserved, by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, and its frescoes were excavated between 1903 and 1905. They are considered outstanding examples of the Pompeian Third Style, combining Egyptian imagery, mythological scenes and delicate ornamental framing across four decorated rooms known as the Black Room, Red Room, Mythological Room and White Room, with subjects ranging from sacro-idyllic landscapes and Egyptian deities to the myths of Polyphemus and Galatea and of Perseus and Andromeda. Though the villa is linked to Agrippa Postumus, its decoration may have been commissioned by his mother Julia or by Augustus after Agrippa the Elder's death in 12 BC, and it later passed into the wider imperial household. The surviving frescoes are today divided between the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.
