The Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles is the fourth hall of the Los Angeles Music Center, designed by Frank Gehry and opened on October 23, 2003. Seating 2,265 people, it serves as the home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra and the Los Angeles Master Chorale, with a design that compromises between a vineyard-style seating configuration, like the Berliner Philharmonie, and a classical shoebox design, like the Vienna Musikverein or Boston Symphony Hall. Lillian Disney made an initial gift of 50 million dollars in 1987 to build the hall as a gift to the people of Los Angeles and a tribute to Walt Disney's devotion to the arts and the city, and both Gehry's architecture and the hall's acoustics, designed by Minoru Nagata and completed under his protege Yasuhisa Toyota, have been widely praised.
