La Joconde nue

Portraits

La Joconde nue, the nude Mona Lisa, is a charcoal drawing heightened with white, made around 1514 to 1516 and attributed to the workshop of Leonardo da Vinci, with some scholars arguing for the hand of Leonardo himself based on the quality of the drawing and evidence of left handed technique. It repeats the pose, hand position and composition of the Mona Lisa but shows the sitter undressed to the waist, and is thought to be either a preparatory study connected to the painted Mona Lisa or one of a group of roughly twenty such nude Mona Lisa variants produced in the circle of Leonardo, among them a companion drawing known as Donna nuda held at the Hermitage. Measuring about 28 by 21 inches, it has been held at the Condé Museum in Chantilly, France, since 1862.
