Panorama of the Battle of Waterloo

Museums and Cultural Venues

The Panorama of the Battle of Waterloo is a monumental panoramic oil painting, about 110 metres in circumference and 12 metres high, painted by the French artist Louis Dumoulin and completed in 1912, depicting successive episodes of the 1815 Battle of Waterloo with emphasis on the French cavalry charges. It is displayed in a purpose built neoclassical rotunda designed by the architect Franz Van Ophem and completed in 1911, standing on the battlefield itself at Braine l Alleud in Walloon Brabant, Belgium, and is one of the few panoramic paintings of its era still shown in its original building. The rotunda and its painting were given protected historical monument status in 1998.
