The Dog (Goya)

Abstract and Modernist Paintings

The Dog is the name usually given to a painting by the Spanish artist Francisco de Goya, held today in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. It shows only the head of a dog gazing upward, nearly lost in a large empty expanse of color above a dark sloping mass that conceals the rest of its body. The painting is one of Goya's Black Paintings, a group he painted directly onto the walls of his own house between about 1819 and 1823, in his mid-seventies and suffering acute mental and physical distress; he never intended them for public exhibition, and they remained on the walls of the house for fifty years after he left it.
