The Heart of the Andes is a large oil on canvas landscape painted in 1859 by the American artist Frederic Edwin Church. It presents an idealized composite view of the South American Andes, combining details Church observed on his travels, from foreground foliage and wildlife to the distant, snow capped peak of Mount Chimborazo, along with a small cross and pilgrim figures set within the scene. Its exhibition in New York in 1859 was a sensation and helped establish Church as the leading American landscape painter of his day. The painting measures about 168 by 303 centimetres and has been held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art since 1909.
