The Son of Man is a 1964 oil on canvas painting by the Belgian surrealist René Magritte, often described as his best known work. It shows a man in an overcoat and bowler hat standing before a low wall with the sea and a cloudy sky behind him, his face largely hidden by a hovering green apple though his eyes remain visible above its edge. Magritte said the apple partly hides the face, leaving an apparent face in its place, and that the painting explores how everything visible hides something else. The work is now in a private collection.
