What Our Lord Saw from the Cross

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

A watercolor painted around 1890 by the French painter James Tissot, part of his larger series The Life of Jesus Christ, 350 watercolors illustrating Gospel narratives that Tissot completed between 1886 and 1894 after extensive research travel through the Middle East; the Brooklyn Museum purchased the whole series in 1900. The painting depicts the Crucifixion from Christ's own point of view rather than centering on his figure: only his feet appear, at the bottom of the picture, while the rest of the composition shows the witnesses gathered below, including his followers and other bystanders.
