Melencolia I

Prints and Drawings

Melencolia I is an engraving completed by the German artist Albrecht Dürer in 1514, one of his three so-called Meisterstiche, or master engravings, alongside Knight, Death and the Devil and Saint Jerome in His Study. It depicts a brooding winged female figure, personifying melancholy, surrounded by scattered tools and symbolic objects including a truncated polyhedron, a magic square, a pair of compasses and a sleeping dog, an arrangement whose precise meaning has been debated by scholars for centuries but is generally read as a meditation on the frustrations and limits of human creative and intellectual endeavour. Its dense allegorical complexity and technical virtuosity have made it one of the most analysed prints in the history of Western art.
