Mackintosh Building

Civic, Commercial and Institutional Buildings

The Mackintosh Building is the most architecturally significant building of the Glasgow School of Art, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh in phases between 1896 and 1909 on Renfrew Street in Glasgow's Garnethill area. It became one of the city's most iconic landmarks of international fame and is considered a pioneer of the Modern Style, the British variant of Art Nouveau. The building was severely damaged by fire in May 2014 and further destroyed by a second fire in June 2018, leaving only its burnt-out shell standing, with plans in place for its reconstruction in keeping with Mackintosh's original style and content.
