Giacomo Puccini

Composers

Giacomo Puccini was an Italian composer whose operas, written in the verismo tradition of emotionally direct, realistically observed drama, remain among the most frequently performed works in the world. La Boheme, Tosca, and Madama Butterfly established him as the leading Italian opera composer after Verdi, prized for lyrical, immediately memorable melody and a keen sense of theatrical pacing. His final opera, Turandot, was left unfinished at his death in 1924 and completed by another composer from his sketches. Puccini's gift for combining orchestral color with vocal writing that serves character and emotion has kept his major operas in continuous international repertoire.
