An oil panel painted around 1437 by the Early Netherlandish master Jan van Eyck, showing the Virgin Mary seated on a wooden throne beneath a canopy, breastfeeding the infant Christ. Its small size suggests it was made for private devotion, and its construction suggests it may once have formed the inner panel of a triptych; the Virgin's face has been identified as a portrait of the painter's own wife, Margaretha. The painting takes its present name from an early nineteenth-century owner, Charles II, Duke of Parma and Lucca, and dates from near the end of van Eyck's career, between the Ghent Altarpiece and his death in 1441.
