Phidias, or Pheidias (c. 480 to 430 BC), was an Ancient Greek sculptor, painter and architect active in the fifth century BC. His Statue of Zeus at Olympia was counted among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and he also designed the Athena Parthenos inside the Parthenon and the colossal bronze Athena Promachos that stood on the Athenian Acropolis between the Parthenon and the Propylaea, the monumental gateway serving as the entrance to the Acropolis. He was the son of Charmides of Athens, and the ancients believed his teachers were Hegias and Ageladas.
