The Niccoline Chapel is the private chapel of Pope Nicholas V in the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City, housed in the tower built by Pope Innocent III, and decorated between 1447 and 1449 by Fra Angelico and his assistants. Its frescoes present parallel scenes from the lives of two early Christian martyrs, Saint Stephen on the upper level and Saint Lawrence below, both shown as deacons who distributed alms before their executions, beneath a star-studded vault with the Four Evangelists and pilasters depicting the Eight Doctors of the Church. The program reflected Nicholas V's ambition to rebuild Rome as the capital of Christianity.
