Fayum Mummy Portraits

Portraits

A body of naturalistic panel portraits painted in encaustic or tempera and attached to mummies in Roman-era Egypt, chiefly from the first to third centuries CE, found concentrated in the Fayum basin. They are the largest surviving body of panel painting from the ancient world and offer a uniquely direct record of individual faces from antiquity.
