Paraphrase on the Finding of a Glove

Prints and Drawings

Paraphrase on the Finding of a Glove is a cycle of ten etchings created by the German artist Max Klinger in 1877 and 1878, when he was twenty-one, first exhibited in 1878 and later reissued in a mixed technique of engraving, etching and aquatint in 1881. Klinger's first narrative print sequence, the cycle follows a story of love, death and fantasy that opens at a Berlin skating rink and moves through increasingly fantastical episodes triggered by a dropped glove, which becomes an object of obsession for the story's protagonist, modeled on Klinger himself. The prints combine realistic and dreamlike imagery, using hallucinatory shifts of scale and jarring juxtapositions to convey the psychological pull of longing and loss.
