The Rhodes Colossus

Prints and Drawings

The Rhodes Colossus is an editorial cartoon by the English illustrator Edward Linley Sambourne, published in Punch magazine in 1892. It depicts the British business magnate Cecil Rhodes as a giant straddling the African continent, holding a telegraph line grounded at its northern and southern ends, a reference to his ambition to build a Cape to Cairo railway and telegraph line connecting British colonial territory. The image is a visual pun on the ancient Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
