Music in the Tuileries

Genre Scenes

Music in the Tuileries is an 1862 oil on canvas painting by the French artist Édouard Manet, showing a crowd of fashionable Parisians gathered in the Tuileries Gardens for one of the free public concerts held there each week, though no musicians actually appear in the scene. Manet placed several of his own friends and fellow artists and writers among the crowd, along with a self portrait, making the work as much a record of his own social and artistic circle as of Parisian leisure. It measures about 76 by 118 centimetres, and ownership of the work is shared between the National Gallery in London and the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin under the terms of the Lane Bequest. First shown in 1863, it went on to influence Impressionist painters including Monet, Renoir and Bazille.
