Yellow Cow

Abstract and Modernist Paintings

A 1911 oil painting by the German Expressionist Franz Marc, held by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, depicting a leaping yellow cow set against a calmer, angular, brightly colored landscape. Marc used color symbolically rather than naturalistically, and here yellow is understood to stand for femininity and sensuality; the art historian Mark Rosenthal has suggested the cow may represent Marc's wife, Maria Franck, whom he married the year the painting was made. The painting reflects the influence of Wassily Kandinsky on Marc's developing theory of color, part of the Der Blaue Reiter circle the two artists founded together.
