The Romans in their Decadence

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

The Romans in their Decadence is an 1847 painting by the French artist Thomas Couture, now held in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, depicting a scene of Roman decadence. It debuted as the most highly acclaimed work of the Paris Salon of 1847, a year before the 1848 Revolution that toppled the July Monarchy, and its exhibition catalogue quoted the Roman poet Juvenal on the ruinous luxury that follows prolonged peace. Reminiscent of the style of Raphael, the painting is typical of the French classic style practiced between 1850 and 1900 and is today analyzed within the wider current of academic art. It was etched by Edmond Hedouin.
