Home›Works›Subject Matter›Leisure and Entertainment ScenesGroupLeisure and Entertainment ScenesGenre paintings depicting people at play or at rest: dancing, a card game, a garden party, a day at the races or the beach, a circus or athletic spectacle, a theatrical or musical performance, or an outing taken purely for pleasure. This group gathers scenes whose subject is voluntary recreation rather than paid work or the routine business of running a household, spanning the Impressionist circle's own favorite subjects through much earlier festive and pastoral scenes of the same kind. It excludes a scene set specifically in a tavern or cafe, gathered under its own group, and excludes an ordinary domestic activity performed at home, gathered under Domestic and Household Scenes.FactsBrowse BySourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsComparisonNarrative CategoryWell-attestedEveryday Life 1Browse ByAll Leisure and Entertainment ScenesLeisure and Entertainment Scenes28 entriesLeisure and Entertainment ScenesFilter Results28 entriesCreatorAllAnders Zorn (1)Domenico Ghirlandaio (1)Edgar Degas (3)Francisco Goya (1)Georges Seurat (1)Gustave Courbet (2)Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1)Jean-Antoine Watteau (1)Johannes Vermeer (1)John Everett Millais (2)Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1)Paul Cezanne (1)Paul Gauguin (2)Pierre-Auguste Renoir (4)Thomas Eakins (1)Édouard Manet (2)Art FormAllDrawing (1)Fresco (2)Painting (25)MovementAllImpressionism (2)Post-Impressionism (2)Realism (1)MediumAllFresco on lime plaster (1)Oil on canvas (15)Oil on panel (1)Pastel (1)Pastel on paper (1)Tempera on poplar panel (1)Watercolor (1)Watercolour (1)Year CreatedAll-1700 (1)-1550 (1)-1450 (1)1490 (1)1664 (1)1717 (1)1814 (1)1855 (1)1856 (1)1857 (1)1860 (1)1863 (1)1866 (1)1873 (1)1876 (1)1880 (1)1881 (2)1883 (1)1884 (1)1885 (1)1886 (1)1891 (2)1892 (1)1894 (1)1897 (1)1900 (1)1943 (1)1992 (1)GenreAllPainting (27)GroupAllLeisure and Entertainment Scenes (28)PlaceAllAthens (1)Birmingham (1)Boston (1)Chicago (1)France (9)Greece (1)Knossos (1)Pasadena (1)Russia (1)Spain (1)United Kingdom (1)United States (6)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 28A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande JatteGenre Scenes5 linksAkrotiri Boxer FrescoGenre Scenes2 linksAn Old Man and his GrandsonGenre Scenes3 linksBal du Moulin de la GaletteGenre Scenes4 linksBlue DancersGenre Scenes3 linksBull-Leaping FrescoGenre Scenes2 linksDance in the CountryGenre Scenes3 linksLa Classe de DanseGenre Scenes3 linksLe Déjeuner sur l'herbeGenre Scenes4 linksLuncheon of the Boating PartyGenre Scenes3 linksSommarnöjeGenre Scenes3 linksSpring (Alma-Tadema painting)Genre Scenes3 linksStay Up LateGenre Scenes2 linksTahitian Women on the BeachGenre Scenes3 linksThe Black BrunswickerGenre Scenes3 linksThe Blind GirlGenre Scenes3 linksThe Burial of the SardineGenre Scenes3 linksThe Card PlayersGenre Scenes4 linksThe Concert (Vermeer)Genre Scenes3 linksThe Embarkation for CytheraGenre Scenes3 linksThe Painter's StudioGenre Scenes3 linksThe Races at LongchampGenre Scenes3 linksThe Swimming HoleGenre Scenes3 linksThe Tightrope DancerGenre Scenes3 linksTwo Sisters (On the Terrace)Genre Scenes3 linksWaiting (Degas)Genre Scenes3 linksWhen Will You Marry?Genre Scenes3 linksYoung Ladies Beside the Seine (Summer)Genre Scenes3 linksSources1.
