Genre paintings set in a public urban space, a street, a market, a square or a shop front, depicting the ordinary or commercial life of a city rather than a private home or a scene of leisure. This group gathers marketplace and street-vendor scenes, crowded public thoroughfares, and shop or commercial interiors open to the public, including historical market scenes whose subject matter documents a difficult chapter of the past rather than endorsing it. It excludes a tavern, cafe or drinking establishment, however public, gathered under its own group, and excludes a scene of manual outdoor labor such as farming or fishing, gathered under Work and Labor Scenes.
