Inexhaustible Chalice

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

The Inexhaustible Chalice is a wonderworking icon of the Mother of God that appeared in Serpukhov, Russia, in 1878. Venerated in the Russian Orthodox Church, it is associated with prayers for healing from alcoholism, drug addiction and related afflictions, and is also known as the Inexhaustible Cup. The original icon's present whereabouts are uncertain, and an image believed to be it has reportedly surfaced in a private collection without confirmed recovery; a widely used 1992 copy in the Byzantine style was painted by the iconographer Alexander Sokolov and is kept at the Vysotsky Monastery in Serpukhov.
