Word of Life (mural)

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

Word of Life, widely known by its nickname Touchdown Jesus, is a 1964 mural by the American artist Millard Sheets on the exterior wall of the Hesburgh Library at the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana. The mural, which stands 134 feet tall and 68 feet wide, depicts Christ with his arms raised above his head, a pose that from certain angles at the adjacent football stadium appears to echo a referee signaling a touchdown, giving the work its popular nickname. Composed of granite and stone chips set into the library exterior wall, the mural has become one of the most recognizable landmarks associated with Notre Dame.
