Hyakkai Zukan

Illuminated Manuscripts and Calligraphic Works

Hyakkai Zukan, or The Illustrated Volume of a Hundred Demons, is a Japanese picture scroll painted in 1737 by the Edo-period artist Sawaki Suushi, a student of Hanabusa Itcho. The scroll contains thirty paintings of ghosts, spirits and monsters known as yokai, drawn from Japanese literature, folklore and earlier artwork, and its inscription credits the compilation to Ko Hogen Motonobu and Abe Suo-no-Kami Masanaga before Suushi's own copying. Once owned by the costume historian and Nihonga painter Yoshikawa Kanpo, the scroll is now held by the Fukuoka City Museum, and its imagery went on to shape later depictions of yokai in Japanese art.
