Jupiter and Thetis

History, Religious and Mythological Paintings

Jupiter and Thetis is an 1811 neoclassical painting by the French artist Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, completed before he turned thirty-one and held today at the Musée Granet in Aix-en-Provence. It depicts a scene from Homer's Iliad in which the sea nymph Thetis begs Jupiter to intervene on behalf of her son Achilles during the Trojan War, contrasting the towering, cloud-borne figure of the god with the small, kneeling figure of Thetis below him.
