Rome, Open City is a 1945 Italian neorealist war drama directed by Roberto Rossellini and co-written by Sergio Amidei, Celeste Negarville and Federico Fellini. Set in Rome during 1944 under Nazi occupation, it follows a Resistance fighter attempting to flee the city with the help of a Catholic priest, taking its title from Rome's official declaration as an open city in August 1943. Considered one of the most important and representative works of Italian neorealism, it won the Palme d'Or at the 1946 Cannes Film Festival and launched the international careers of Rossellini, Fellini and the actress Anna Magnani, and forms the first film in Rossellini's Neorealist Trilogy, followed by Paisan and Germany, Year Zero.
