Portraits of Rulers, Popes and Statesmen

Portraits of people who held power, among them kings and queens, emperors and empresses, dukes, a doge, popes and a modern prime minister. A work belongs here when the cited article names the sitter as a ruler, noble or head of government. It excludes portraits of private citizens, artists and court entertainers, which sit in their own groups. Many were official images made to project authority, so the sitter is the guide to placement and not the style of the painter.
